In riding a horse, we borrow freedom.

— Helen Thompson

My use of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) at DeFranco Counseling offers patients a unique and experiential approach to healing, growth, and self-discovery. Sessions take place in a peaceful outdoor setting alongside our horses, where patients are invited to slow down, connect, and engage in hands-on activities that support emotional awareness, confidence, communication, and trust. Horses naturally respond to human emotions and behaviors, creating opportunities for insight and regulation.

EAP often helps clients recognize patterns, practice mindfulness, and experience connection in ways that can feel more natural and less intimidating than traditional talk therapy alone. Whether clients are navigating anxiety, trauma, life transitions, relationship challenges, or personal growth, EAP provides a powerful opportunity for healing and meaningful change in a calm and supportive environment.

During a session, clients may participate in activities such as grooming, leading, observing, or interacting with the horses while working collaboratively with the licensed therapist.

No riding experience is required, as the focus is on the therapeutic relationship between the client, therapist, and horse. Sessions are tailored to each individual’s goals and comfort level, creating space to process emotions, build coping skills, improve boundaries and communication, and develop greater self-awareness.

I have worked with horses from a very young age and can speak firsthand to the confidence that develops from working with these incredible creatures, as well as the calming influence they provide.

During EAP sessions, I am with a client every step of the way. I help the patient and horse become comfortably acquainted and connected through observation and hands-on activities. Though sessions focus on intentional silence and physical movements, I will ask the client a few reflective questions that aid the process of personal emotional insight and expression.
